The Lyman series consists of ultraviolet spectral lines in the hydrogen atom. The wavelengths of the Lyman series range from approximately 91 nm to 122 nm. These wavelengths correspond to transitions of electrons in hydrogen atoms from higher energy levels to the ground state. The Lyman series is named after its discoverer, Theodore Lyman. **

The main difference between the Balmer and Lyman series is the energy levels involved in the transitions. The Balmer series involves transitions of electrons from higher energy levels to the second energy level (n=2), resulting in the emission of visible light. On the other hand, the Lyman series involves transitions of electrons from higher energy levels to the first energy level (n=1), resulting in the emission of ultraviolet light. Additionally, the Balmer series is the second line series in the hydrogen spectrum, while the Lyman series is the first line series. **

It is unlikely that Putin will simply give up on Lyman, as it is currently under the control of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic, which is supported by Russia. The annexation of Crimea by Russia in 2014 set a precedent for their willingness to use military force to assert control over territories they consider to be historically or strategically important. Therefore, it is possible that Putin may continue to support the Donetsk People's Republic's claim to Lyman. **
